Description

Building on the success of our raspberry pi (RPI) power filter and DAC hats, QAV is born with a holistic inclusion of power supply within a chassis of fully decked out connectors and colour display screen professionally installed.

To start off, the hats in QAV have been muscled up in grade to provide even higher quality sound improvement. Firstly, the power filter hat has a higher capacitance value than the standalone one in total to give the best possible power source to both the RPI below and DAC hat above. Secondly, a major improvement on the DAC hat is the use of a Sabre ESS 9038Q2M chip at its heart while having the ability to output both analogue RCA and 3.5mm, digital S/PDIF in both Coaxial and Toslink and I²S in HDMI! The flexibility of this QAV streamer is now one could use the analogue out directly to amp without any external DAC at all. For the more advance users, the digital outputs in either S/PDIF or I²S will level up the quality of sound even further from an underrated RPI/Volumio package QA has been wholeheartedly recommending.

DAC hats on RPI is nothing new. And there have been many hats doing the same as QAV, but mainly just offering S/PDIF digital outputs. To have analogue outs in addition to digital outs is what our QAV has in flexibility. To bring it further up a notch as a more competent streamer, I²S is available as well.

Native DSD decoding is not possible not because of the hardware limitation, but it being an I²S limitation itself from Raspberry Pi. I²S out allows higher sampling rates up to PCM384 and DoP256 while S/PDIF is capped to PCM192 and DoP64. Depending on one’s library of music file types, S/PDIF and I²S output capabilities are more than enough to satisfy most needs. The important thing we are looking at here is the quality of output, where either of these is easily high audiophile grade over some USB DACs despite having way over the top decoding limits most of us probably will not use.

Good source of power is super important for RPI to sound great. In addition to having the power filter sitting between the RPI and DAC hat, the power source has to be clean to start with. With a total of 3 filters for power to pass through before powering the RPI and DAC, the first stage starts at the IEC input with a Corcom EMI filter. It will go to the R-core transformer for the first stepping down of voltages before going through the second linear filtering stage and further regulated to a stable 5V voltage required. Having these excellent components of power source built inside QAV ensures the RPI and DAC are performing optimally without leaving much to be desired – because past experience tells us that if they are simply used as smaller stacks, they are seldom powered adequately, or worse, powered by noisy switch mode power supply, thereby not fulfilling the potential at all. We are even using better fuse made for hifi from Rod Rain Audio at the power IEC inlet, so the only thing that is having any influence to the quality of the power source now is simply the power cable. And for that, we highly recommend the Gotham 85025 Power Cable which is fantastic for use on source and DACs.

Secondary output of the R-core transformer goes to another regulator for the power of the external 3.5 inch screen mounted beautifully in front of QAV. The screen provides useful information like the date, time, and most importantly the details of the music being played and any album art accompanied. Clean, crisp and sharp, the screen panel is a delight to look at, displaying accurate colours. When music stops playing, it will automatically switch into screensaver mode, showing various beautiful imageries grabbed from the web server during this period. Many of the settings of the screen can be set under a plugin from Volumio, but the default appearance from QA will have been set to most users’ satisfaction.

At the back of the panel are wide variety of connections useful for many to use the QAV. Every single one of them are outputting simultaneously without any switch or toggle that prevent one from playing while the other is used. By using rack mount connectors for every one of the outputs, any cables of thickness can be plugged in without feeling cramp, while also be assured of the secure fit and premium build. Internal hook up wires for power and analogue connections are using Gotham cables for a trusted and pristine connection. 3.5mm and DC connector used for internal hook up to the DAC hat are similarly using high grade components from Viablue and Oyaide plugs for the best connection.

Unique design of the chassis is perfectly CNCed with precision, while wordings and logo are cleanly and clearly printed/engraved, wholly completing a highly professional machine that looks good and sounds even better. Thick aluminum also serves as a very good heat-dissipating component.

Music libraries are easily managed with easy import into Volumio by means of internal storage in microSD card, external HDD/SSD through USB or with NAS either wired or wirelessly. Supports UPNP, Airplay and Spotify Connect on free Volumio version. Tidal is supported on paid version at EUR60 / year.

External storage medium like a solid state HDD offers superb transfer speed from computer and easy plug in to QAV without cables which can affect the sound. Available as part of the package with the speedy ADATA XPG NVMe SSD inside the trusted UGreen enclosure.

RPI is not offered as a complete solution but more as an add-on because the price is very volatile at the moment due to worldwide shortages. Certain users may have their own RPI which they can hand to QA for assembly – only RPI 4B. Or certain users may be able to get it elsewhere at their own prices – we leave it to individuals. For hassle-free solution, one may just get the entire package through us.

FREE shipping in Singapore. 2 years warranty from QA. Comes with 32GB microSD card with Volumio OS installed. Setup guide included with purchase. Build and assembled on order up to 3-4 weeks lead time.
