As a result of the Ukraine War, any current Russian tubes have been temporarily replaced by Muzishare-branded tubes (ODMed from various Chinese tubes).
KT88 is probably one of the most popular tube types in the higher end range of modern tube amps. They are distinctly rotund in shape with a plateau top, making them very much instantly recognisable whenever they are seated in any amps.
Tube amps are commonly touted as smooth-sounding and low-powered. That may be true to some extent. But the advent of KT88 tube amps over the years, and now the SET 845/805, are challenging this stereotype of tube amps.
Muzishare X7 is not the biggest tube amp in their family lineup. At slightly over 25kg, it is a modest but structurally-strong build of an amp that uses 4x KT88 tubes as the power tubes. The characteristics of KT88 is high-power output, and that is easily produced with a 45 watt per channel output in X7, effortlessly. The above notion of saying tube amp being mellow, smooth and low-powered has none of these in the X7.
X7 can easily drive most, if not all, of the bookshelf speakers in the market, as well as most floor standers without breaking much of a sweat. It will take a serious pairing for it to break a sweat – if not, the sound from X7 is well competing amongst many solid-state (SS) amps with the addition of the sweet harmonics nature of tubes amps.
Throwing in gernes like rock, orchestra, heavy metal, electronica etc, X7 handles them excellently with wide fields of stereo imaging. Distinctive instrument separation of the tracks makes listening with X7 very enjoyable on spaces where speakers can breathe. Cleanliness of sounds is something not often used to describe sounds from tube amps, but Muzishare X7 is one of those in the line-up we can absolutely say to be really clean and define.
There is a switch in front for the adjustment of Triode and Ultralinear. Flipping to Triode mode decreases the power output to 25 watts per channel and that takes off some edge of the sounds, making it more analogous and smoother sounding, great for vocal genres of music like Jazz and Pop. If not, the true-sounding nature of X7 is at the Ultralinear mode, where you will hear the most succinct details a tube amp can produce. Talk about versatility!
The preamp section of the tube amp is driven by 2x 12AU7 and 1x 12AX7 tubes, with a single rectifier tube 5AR4 in the mix. If rolling of KT88 tubes is a costly affair, rolling of the preamp and rectifier tubes can bring various surprises with the wide availability of alternatives for them.
The front panel sport a precisely CNC-machined plate of solid and thick aluminium to house the various buttons and knobs together with a twin lighted panel of VU meters. The orange glow of the middle pair of VU meters will add sophistication and charm when music is playing as the needle will seemingly dance to the music. The meters also prove to be ever useful for the right biasing current tuning. Before the VU meters is a 6.5mm single ended headphone output that can easily drive most headphones in the moderate impedance rating.
A brilliant piece of art in build, the entire unit except the front panel is finished with dark, glittered and polished coating, sold in a very competitive pricing package, allowing anyone to really foray into the high end sound of tubes without spending a huge amount other brands would command, all for more connectivity options with better specifications even.
