As a result of the Ukraine War, any current Russian tubes have been temporarily replaced by Muzishare-branded tubes (ODMed from various Chinese tubes).
Different tubes have different characters of sound. When comes to silky, smooth, realistic and forward vocals, 300B will possibly take the throne for being the tube best in presenting that.
300B is a low power output tube – it sure does not exhibit the grandeur of scale of 845 /805 nor the dynamism of KT88. But they are absolute favourites to be paired with bookshelf speakers of strong midrange performance, and that is where the frequency of voices and violins sing true to stellar.
A dedicated 300B amp from Muzishare, the X9 looks imposingly big and solid – hardly an amp one will associate with being low-powered. At only 8 Watts per channel, there is no secret formula or any extravagant need to increase the power output to please anyone. No materials are spared in the design of X9 if that meant the 8 Watts extruded from the 300Bs are the best 8 Watts they can produce.
There are many types of 300B tube amps available and often many of them are physically small in size, as though it is a rightful association since they are low power output in nature. For Muzishare, they design and build X9 with 300B tubes to be a high-end and flagship model seldom seen anywhere else.
At the heart of the amp is a pair of rectifier tube, the 274B. Everything is a pair in X9. In addition to continue the spirit of using rectifier tubes in their high-end tube amps, Muzishare designed the X9 with a rectifier tube in each of the channel, preserving the fully tube-based sound hardly seen elsewhere. A common and popular rectifier tube, the 274B is easily swappable to 5U4G, 5Z3 and 5R4GY if such upgrade path is to be taken.
Beside the rectifier tubes are the stars of the amp, the beautiful 300B coke-shape tubes. The mesmerising trait of 300Bs is the ability of render vocals to be so hyper realistic and focus. It is never a hoax when people said the voices sound so true-to-form when they are being rendered out with a true 300B tube amp. That is what X9 is capable of. This is also the reason why the Muzishare R100 has this trait of smooth vocals despite the output tube being the large SET tubes of 845/805 – because they are driven by a pair of 300B tubes. For all the muscular build of R100, it is a superb versatility to be able to inherit some nuances of 300B and sound similarly polite when required.
Standing before the 4 gorgeous 274Bs and 300Bs are the pre amp tubes, 6SN7 and 6SL7, a pair of each. In our opinion, the 6SN7 and 6SL7 sounded less aggressive while retaining the sweetness of the midrange of 12AX7. And perhaps that is the reason why they were chosen over the 12-volt series of the pre amp tubes, just so the midrange can be ever so pronounced and tender. In terms of aesthetical presentation, having the 6SN7 and 6SL7 in front look more balanced and elegant as well.
The vast connections available at the back of X9 remains a standard for Muzishare. This standard is actually an enhancement over many other tube amps, even branded ones. Sporting the standard line in options, there is also a phono input (getting more common for Muzishare tube amps now) for direct turntable connection even with a lack of phono stage, as well as a true balance input (also becoming a common feature now for Muzishare tube amps) for improved dynamic connection from many DACs nowadays.
The pre-in is so important for certain users if they have additionally a high quality pre amp they would like to use before the X9, controlling the volume through it, the X9 will then be working as a dedicated power amp with a flip of a switch in front. As per most other tube amps of Muzishare, the pre-in mode will still utilise the pre amp tubes – they are not bypassed. With 3 impedance rating of speaker taps, users can easily choose the best and nearest impedance output to their speakers’ rating.
The front panel sport a precisely CNC-machined plate of solid and thick aluminium to house the various buttons and knobs together with a twin lighted panel of VU meters. The NFB 1 & 2 options are basically like flavours of sound one can choose to determine which one prefers. They sound like the Triode and Ultralinear modes of X5 and X7, where NFB 1 is akin to the Triode mode, warmer sounding and more intimate, and NFB 2 is similar to Ultralinear mode – slightly higher in dynamic range and improved resolution at a slight expense of vocal intimacy. Either one will definitely be pleasing to the various genres of music.
The orange glow of the middle pair of VU meters will add sophistication and charm when music is playing as the needle is seemingly dancing to the music. The meters also prove to be ever useful for the right biasing current tuning. Before the VU meters is a 6.5mm single ended headphone output that can easily drive most headphones in the moderate impedance rating.
The flagship status of X9 came also from the fact that stock units already come with audiophile-grade capacitors from Mundorf. This is definitely a great validation to the cost it demanded, which is honestly never unreasonable to start with for the sheer size, construction and sonic quality of a pure 300B Class A integrated tube amp.
We could not emphasise this further – but if anyone wishes to use this amp on floorstanders and/or to listen to rock, heavy metal, or any music where big bass is desired, this tube amp is definitely not the right one, and it has nothing to do with the capability of it. Synergy with X9, or 300Bs for the matter, is a delicate touch, with huge level of expectation to be maintained. But when paired well, the sound output of X9 is magical, especially female voices. On good recordings, background music will envelope you, putting you inside the music, with the lead vocals being placed in prominence at the absolute centre with precise imaging. The sense of air adds to the touch of realism, providing every nuance of details you could almost imagine being in the exact scenario the artistes were in when doing the recording.
